President S R Nathan Encourages Greater Cultural Cooperation And Exchanges Between Singapore And Uzbekistan (25 Jan)

His Excellency, Islam Karimov's visit marks a historic milestone in Singapore-Uzbekistan relations as it coincides with the tenth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. And it is also his first State Visit to Singapore.

Your Excellency Islam Karimov's visit has also opened a new chapter in bilateral relations as earlier on, Singapore and Uzbekistan signed five agreements. These agreements will encourage greater interactions at all levels and lay the foundation to deepen and broaden political and economic relations.

It would also encourage greater cultural cooperation and exchanges between Singapore and Uzbekistan as such cooperation is important in helping the peoples of the two countires understand each other better and build stronger links.

This shows foresight or is a example of pragmatism in practice.

This is an important principle of good governance and is shown with not only our government but governments around the world.

Presidents and Prime Ministers visit various countries to establish realtionships and forge strong bonds.
they invest much of their time to do so. why?

Strong bonds are very important especially for smaller countries like us. just like people, countries need friends that they can count on, especailly in times of need. countries set up foreign trade agreements and cultural exchanges, all in an effort to maintain these friendships.

What good comes out of these friendships? surley one does not want to be in a friendship that does not benefit one in any way without a motive.

A friend is there to give u support when faced with an opponent or problem.
A friend is there to help you in time of need.
A friend is could be there to mentor, or you could be the mentor.
A friend is there to enrich you, to share experiences, to grow with you.

and yes, i feel it is the same for countries. By establishing these friendships u pave the way for future ' interactions' between countries 'and lay the foundation to deepen and broden political and economic relations' which will benefit both parties. Fostering these good relations help the peoples of the countries 'understand each other batter and build stronger lnks' which will help do just that. Though it might be a common act - paying visits to various countries, it must be valued and not taken as just another state visit and I hope youths will be able to realise so.
